Hi, my name is Mick Sweeney.

I am in my last semester of my Primary Education degree at Monash University in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. I’m extremely excited about the prospect of completing my degree and getting out there and involved in teaching. I’m always thinking about things I could try in the classroom or wondering how things might work with a class and imagining what my first day, week, month, year of teaching my own class might be like.

Through this blog I aim to get some of these thoughts out for my own reflection and hopefully at some stage receive some feedback or discussion about my posts.

I subscribe to various education blogs and have always enjoyed reading them. One of the blogs I follow is ‘Teacher Challenge’ which after reading the ‘Kick Start Your Blog’ post, I thought why not give it a go.

About the Title

I spent a lot of time trying to think of a good name for my blog. I came across a quote by a Greek Poet called Aeschylus who lived around 500BC, the full quote is,

“I’m not afraid of storms, for I am learning to sail my ship”

I like the quote as it reminds me to keep trying, keep learning, keep improving, keep taking on challenges and keep going even though things might be difficult. Not everything I do or try in a classroom is going to work. I’m not afraid to make mistakes for I am learning to be the best teacher I can possibly be!

Little more about me

  • I’m a sports tragic!
  • I play cricket for the mighty Dandenong Panthers, basketball just for a bit of fun, also when time permits I like to run, cycle and go to the gym.
  • I follow the AFL passionately and remain in hopeful ignorance that my Saints will one day win the elusive second premiership.
  • I’m a Supercoach nut! I like to say it’s my winter sport after cricket season is over.
  • I like to read, I’m a bit of a closet geek when it come to books. I pretty much stick to the fantasy genre. Loved Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Song of Fire and Ice just to name a few. I think it’s the fact that I can open a book and feel like I’m somewhere else that attracts me to the genre.
  • My favourite movie is 300.
  • I played cricket in England for a season for a little club in North Yorkshire called Killinghall.
  • I travelled around Europe while living and playing cricket in England.
  • Spelling and grammar is not a strength of mine, which oddly I think has made me a better teacher of it.

If you have any thoughts, opinions, comments, advice or anything at all I’d love to hear from you!!

I hope you enjoy the blog!!

Cheers

Mick
